Guests of SCEECS 2016 held on 5th-6th March, 2016
IEEE Student Branch of MANIT organised IEEE Students’ Conference on Electrical, Electronics and Computer Science on 5th-6th March,2016. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Appu Kuttan KK, Director of MANIT.
“Scientists study the world as it is; engineers create the world that has never been”, said Dr HC Verma from IIT Kanpur while speaking about the ‘Challenges of Mass Scale Science Education’ in the beginning of SCEECS-16.He talked about how the component of ‘thinking’ has been demolished from the education system and how education & reality have become mutually exclusive. In his opinion, ‘Temples of Education’ now lack educational enlightenment.
Dr AS Pillai, CEO and MD, Brahmos Aerospace, talked about the innovations in aerospace technologies. He also hashed out the achievements of Brahmos and other missiles.
Dr. Richard Stallman (Founder of Free Software Foundation) explained the students what ‘free software movement’ stands for. He said the propriety software is the enemy of the spirit of education, except for reverse engineering and all educational activities should use free software and also share free copies of the software. The school has a duty to refuse propriety software.
On the day 1 of the conference, 40 papers were presented in poster and 50 in the conference. A workshop on ‘Internet of Things’ was also conducted.
Closing ceremony of biennial International Students’ Conference, SCEECS 2016 (IEEE Students’ Conference on Electrical, Electronics and Computer Science) was organized on 6th March,2016 by the IEEE Student Branch of MANIT Bhopal. The conference observed a total of 1000 registrations for guest lectures & workshops. Over 400 papers were submitted in the conference, which were reviewed by renowned faculty members of various IIT’s and NIT’s, and 150 papers were selected for the presentation during SCEECS’16. The shortlisted papers will be published in IEEE Xplore. The whole campus was buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm during the two day conference.
Proceedings began with the lecture of Dr. John C Mather who interacted with the attendees by skype. He explained the theory of the expanding universe which has no centre & no edge.He shared amazing facts about, how the universe started with a Big Bang and possible speculations about the future. He talked about space, radio & electronic telescope such as James Webb telescope, giant Nagellan, Hubble space telescopes.He also shared his experience about the COBE satellite project, which was completed in a period of 15 years with a mission to map the smoothness of cosmic background radiation field & by extension, to continue validity of the big bang theory of the origin if the universe.
Mr. Sachin Gupta (Co-founder HackerEarth) spoke of his journey of building the tech recruitment company HackerEarth from a scratch. Overnight success is a myth, he said.He shared the stories of Walt Disney, Abraham Lincoln and Jack Mac and emphasized that failures are critical to success. Finding one’s passion, embracing failures and living through them, working on real life problems are some aspects critical to entrepreneurship.
Mr. M.S. Pannirselvam (Range Operations Director, Sri Harikota Project) who was also the chief guest of today’s session, talked about the challenges faced in India’s mars orbiter mission (MOM).He talked about the objectives of nation’s prestigious inter-planetary mission to Mars. No single man can take the credit of a space mission, he said. He mentioned three visionaries of Indian Space Activities- Vikram Sarabhai, Satish Dhawan and Late Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. He spoke of the need of youngsters in India to be a part of the field of space research.His lecture marked the end of a remarkable, memorable & knowledgeable guest lecture series.
On the day 2 , the remaining 70 papers were presented in the conference.The workshop session continued to receive an over-whelming on the day 2 of SCEECS’16. All the participants of guest lectures and Workshop were rewarded with the ‘IEEE-certified Certificate of Merit’. At the end of the workshop, a questionnaire was conducted, and the winner was rewarded with ‘Certificate of Excellence’.
The program ended with the valedictory ceremony. IEEE Branch counselor Dr. Shailendra Jain congratulated the whole IEEE MANIT Student Branch team for the successful organization of SCEECS’16. Mr. Siddharth Saxena (IEEE MANIT SB Chairman ) delivered the vote of thanks to all the faculty members and the participants.
